When should children get their first dental check-up?

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Most parents assume a child's first dentist appointment isn't necessary until all milk teeth have come in or school starts. However, pediatric dental associations worldwide recommend a visit much earlier.

First Visit Rule

  • Golden Rule: "First tooth or first birthday" โ€” whichever comes first.
  • Prevention First: Prevents early childhood cavities before they start.
  • Building Familiarity: Establishes a fear-free relationship with dental spaces early.

What Happens During a First Visit?

A child's first visit is short, gentle, and fun. It usually takes place while the child sits comfortably on a parent's lap. We check jaw growth, inspect new teeth for decay, and guide parents on proper infant gum care and teething relief.

Tips for Parents

  • Avoid using words like "pain", "shot", or "hurt" when describing the visit.
  • Read playful children's books about visiting the dentist beforehand.
  • Schedule morning appointments when your child is well-rested.
